Jordan Eberle’s OT winner lifts Kraken past Flames

Jordan Eberle scored 48 seconds into overtime as the Seattle Kraken defeated the visiting Calgary Flames 2-1 on Saturday.

Chandler Stephenson also scored for Seattle and Joey Daccord made 21 saves. The Kraken won their third game in a row and defeated Calgary for the first time at Climate Pledge Arena after six consecutive defeats over the past three-plus seasons since Seattle joined the NHL as an expansion franchise.

Blake Coleman scored for Calgary, which had its season-opening four-game winning streak come to an end. Dan Vladar stopped 21 of 23 shots.

The Kraken controlled the opening faceoff in overtime and kept the puck until Brandon Montour had it taken away behind the Calgary net. However, Montour immediately stole a pass deep in the Flames’ end and attempted a shot that was blocked. Montour corralled the rebound and fed Eberle for a one-timer from the slot for the winner.

The Flames outshot Seattle 8-5 in the first period, taking the lead on Coleman’s power-play goal at 19:51 of the period with Joshua Mahura in the penalty box for slashing. It came after Daccord turned over the puck in the right corner, with Mikael Backlund feeding Coleman for a slap shot through a screen from just outside the top of the left faceoff circle.

The Kraken tied it on a five-on-three advantage at 12:25 of the second, with Stephenson scoring his first goal since signing with Seattle as a free agent in the offseason.

Jared McCann set up Stephenson for a one-timer from just outside the right faceoff dot with Jaden Schwartz, who got a secondary assist, providing a screen in front of the net. The Kraken got the power play after Calgary’s Kevin Bahl was called for tripping and Jonathan Huberdeau was whistled for slashing.

Neither team scored in the third period despite Seattle having an 11-7 edge in shots.

Seattle defenseman Vince Dunn didn’t play after suffering a mid-body injury in a 6-4 victory against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.

The Flames were without forward Samuel Honzek (upper-body injury), who is listed as week-to-week after taking a heavy hit from Chicago’s Connor Murphy in Calgary’s 3-1 victory against the visiting Blackhawks on Tuesday.
