Logan Stankoven tallies twice to lead Stars past Leafs

Logan Stankoven had two goals to snap a 25-game scoring drought and the visiting Dallas Stars defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Matt Duchene added a goal and two assists for the Stars, who have won eight of their past nine games. Mavrik Bourque also scored a goal, Stankoven added an assist and Jake Oettinger stopped 27 shots as Dallas completed a 4-1-0 road trip.

Toronto had won the seven previous games between the teams, most recently a 5-3 victory at Dallas on Dec. 18.

Auston Matthews scored and Joseph Woll made 19 saves for the Maple Leafs, who have lost three straight games in regulation for the first time this season. Toronto will finish a three-game homestand against New Jersey on Thursday.

The Maple Leafs took the lead at 4:15 of the first period. Mitchell Marner pounced on a Dallas turnover and passed to Matthews, who scored with a high shot from the left circle to the short side.

Toronto went on the power play 34 seconds later and hit the goal post twice during the two minutes.

Stankoven tied the game when he poked in a loose puck that was in the crease at 8:33 of the first. It was his first goal since Nov. 14.

Dallas took the lead with a power-play goal at 12:35 of the second period on a double deflection. Thomas Harley’s shot from the point deflected off Stankoven and then Bourque before going into the net. John Tavares was off for slashing.

Duchene scored on a power play at 1:06 of the third period with a nifty between-the-legs move at the edge of the crease after a pass from Wyatt Johnston. Oliver Ekman-Larsson was off for holding, a penalty assessed late in the second period.

Dallas scored again at 2:54 of the third when Stankoven deflected Duchene’s shot into the net.

Toronto had a power play starting at 8:25 but did not threaten. The Stars finished 2-for-3 on the man advantage, while the Leafs went 0-for-2.

Dallas forward Roope Hintz (upper-body injury) left early in the first period and did not return.
