NHL roundup: Capitals hand Stars first loss

Tom Wilson, Dylan Strome and Taylor Raddysh each scored in a three-goal second period for the host Washington Capitals, who topped the previously unbeaten Dallas Stars 3-2 on Thursday.

After knocking off then 3-0-0 Vegas on Tuesday for their first win, the Capitals trailed 1-0 entering the second period on Thursday before breaking out. Wilson led the second-period surge with his third goal in three games. Charlie Lindgren, solid down the stretch as Dallas pressured, made 22 saves for Washington, which has won two of its first three.

Colin Blackwell and Jason Robertson scored for Dallas, which outscored its opponents 12-5 while opening 4-0-0. However, the Stars didn’t provide much help Thursday for netminder Casey Smith (23 saves), who couldn’t overcome turnovers and poor defensive play in front.

The Stars also failed on all four power-play attempts and are 1-for-17 this season.

Lightning 4, Knights 3

Nikita Kucherov scored his second goal of the game with 55 seconds remaining to lift Tampa Bay past visiting Vegas.

Janis Moser had a goal and two assists and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 22 saves for the Lightning, who improved to 3-0-0.

Brayden McNabb, Pavel Dorofeyev and Ivan Barbashev scored, Jack Eichel and Shea Theodore had two assists apiece and Adin Hill made 21 saves for the Golden Knights.

Blackhawks 4, Sharks 2

Taylor Hall, Tyler Bertuzzi, Nick Foligno and Jason Dickinson scored and Petr Mrazek stopped 20 shots as Chicago defeated visiting San Jose.

Chicago outshot San Jose 27-22 to win its home opener and prevail for the second time in the past three games. Connor Bedard and Teuvo Teravainen contributed two assists apiece. Teravainen has seven points in five games in his return to Chicago, including five points on the man advantage.

Tyler Toffoli and Fabian Zetterlund scored for San Jose, while Mikael Granlund and William Eklund logged two assists apiece. Vitek Vanecek made 23 saves as the Sharks slipped to 0-2-2.

Oilers 4, Predators 2

Connor McDavid scored his first goal of the season and Brett Kulak scored twice, leading Edmonton over host Nashville.

Jeff Skinner also scored for the Oilers, who have won back-to-back games after dropping their first three. Calvin Pickard made 25 saves for his first win of the season and first career win over the Predators. Edmonton improved to 12-1-2 in the last 15 meetings against the Predators — 6-0-2 in eight trips to Nashville.

Filip Forsberg and Jonathan Marchessault scored for Nashville, while Juuse Saros stopped 32 shots. The Predators have lost four straight to open the season.

Rangers 5, Red Wings 2

Artemi Panarin continued his torrid start by recording a hat trick as part of a four-point showing as visiting New York rolled to a victory over Detroit.

Panarin scored two goals in the first period and added his second power-play goal of the game in the second, giving him five goals in New York’s first four games. He recorded his eighth career hat trick and also became the first player in team history with four straight multi-point games to start a season.

Vincent Trocheck set up all of Panarin’s goals, rookie Victor Mancini scored his first career goal and Adam Fox collected three assists for the Rangers, who are off to a 3-0-1 start and have scored 20 goals. Moritz Seider and J.T. Compher scored for the Red Wings, who lost for the third time in four games to begin the season.

Devils 3, Senators 1

Erik Haula and Nathan Bastian scored their first goals of the season to push New Jersey past host Ottawa.

With their third victory in four games since Saturday, the Devils became the first NHL team this season to reach the five-win plateau. Devils goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped 30 shots, allowing only Brady Tkachuk’s power-play goal with 65 seconds left.

Claude Giroux and Jake Sanderson assisted on Tkachuk’s first goal of the campaign. Anton Forsberg stopped 32 of 35 shots for Ottawa.

Canucks 3, Panthers 2 (OT)

Quinn Hughes set up J.T. Miller for the game-winner 2:09 into overtime as Vancouver recorded its first win this season, edging Florida in Sunrise, Fla.

Following a scoreless third period, Hughes slipped a pass back to Miller, who skated in from the right to put Vancouver in the win column for the first time in four games (1-1-2). Hughes finished with a goal and an assist, and Teddy Blueger also scored for the Canucks. Goaltender Kevin Lankinen stopped 26 of 28 shots in his second start.

Jesper Boqvist and Anton Lundell scored and Mackie Samoskevich recorded his first NHL point with an assist as the Panthers’ two-game winning streak ended. Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves.

Blues 1, Islanders 0 (OT)

Joel Hofer made 34 saves and Jake Neighbours scored as St. Louis blanked visiting New York in overtime.

Hofer earned his second career shutout and helped set up Neighbours’ winning goal 2:04 into OT with his outlet pass. Philip Broberg had the primary assist on the winner.

Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves for the Islanders, who have lost three of their four games. Noah Dobson led the visitors with six shots on net.

Kings 4, Canadiens 1

Alex Laferriere scored a tiebreaking goal early in the second period to lift visiting Los Angeles to a victory over Montreal.

Mikey Anderson and Andreas Englund each scored a goal before Adrian Kempe converted into the empty net late in the third period. David Rittich turned aside 26 shots to help the Kings snap a three-game winless skid overall (0-1-2) and defeat the Canadiens for the seventh straight time.

Montreal defenseman Justin Barron scored a goal and Sam Montembeault made 28 saves. Defenseman David Savard was acknowledged by the crowd at Bell Centre for skating in his 800th career NHL game. Defenseman Mike Matheson sustained an upper-body injury and was ruled out before the start of the third period.

Blue Jackets 6, Sabres 4

Kirill Marchenko and Mathieu Olivier both collected one goal and one assist to lead host Columbus to a victory over Buffalo.

Yegor Chinakhov, Adam Fantilli, Zachary Aston-Reese and Damon Severson also scored for the Blue Jackets, who led 2-0 after the first period and 4-3 after two periods. Goaltender Daniil Tarasov made 20 saves and benefitted from Columbus scoring six goals in a game for the second time this season.

Ryan McLeod, Jiri Kulich (first NHL goal), Owen Power and J.J. Peterka replied for the Sabres, who have only one win in their first six games. Goalie Devon Levi stopped 19 shots for Buffalo, which has given up an average of four goals per game this season.

Capitals 3, Stars 2

Jared McCann had a goal and two assists as Seattle opened a five-game homestand with a victory against Philadelphia.

Jordan Eberle and Shane Wright had a goal and assist apiece and Brandon Montour, Eeli Tolvanen and Oliver Bjorkstrand also tallied for the Kraken. Andre Burakovsky added two assists and Philipp Grubauer made 21 saves for his first victory of the season.

Scott Laughton had two goals and an assist and Cam York and Jamie Drysdale also scored for the Flyers, who went 1-2-1 on their season-opening trip. Ivan Fedotov allowed five goals on 24 shots through two periods before being replaced by Samuel Ersson, who stopped four of five shots in the third.
