Jordan Eberle scored 48 seconds into overtime as the Seattle Kraken defeated the visiting Calgary Flames 2-1 on Saturday.
Chandler Stephenson also scored for Seattle and Joey Daccord made 21 saves. The Kraken won their third game in a row and defeated Calgary for the first time at Climate Pledge Arena after six consecutive defeats over the past three-plus seasons since Seattle joined the NHL as an expansion franchise.
Blake Coleman scored for Calgary, which had its season-opening four-game winning streak come to an end. Dan Vladar stopped 21 of 23 shots.
The Kraken controlled the opening faceoff in overtime and kept the puck until Brandon Montour had it taken away behind the Calgary net. However, Montour immediately stole a pass deep in the Flames’ end and attempted a shot that was blocked. Montour corralled the rebound and fed Eberle for a one-timer from the slot for the winner.
Panthers 4, Golden Knights 3 (OT)
Gustav Forsling scored with 17 seconds left in overtime as host Florida defeated Vegas 3 in Sunrise, Fla.
Sam Bennett had the primary assist as Forsling shot the puck into the open right side of the net to end a matchup between the NHL’s two most recent Stanley Cup champions: Vegas in 2023 and Florida in 2024.
Florida also got goals from Sam Reinhart, Bennett and Eetu Luostarinen. Aaron Ekblad and Anton Lundell added two assists each, and Sergei Bobrovsky had 23 saves. Vegas got goals from Tanner Pearson, Keegan Kolesar and Brett Howden. Nicolas Roy added two assists, and Ilya Samsonov provided 45 saves.
Capitals 6, Devils 5 (OT)
Tom Wilson scored his second goal of the game at 4:00 of overtime to lift Washington past New Jersey in Newark, N.J., the Capitals’ third win in a row.
Dylan Strome logged two goals and an assist, Connor McMichael had a goal and an assist and Andrew Mangiapane and Alex Ovechkin also scored for the Capitals. Logan Thompson made 26 saves.
Nico Hischier had two goals and an assist for the Devils, who twice rallied from two-goal deficits to force overtime. Dougie Hamilton, Erik Haula and Dawson Mercer also scored, Timo Meier had three assists, and Jacob Markstrom made 31 saves.
Utah Hockey Club 2, Bruins 1 (OT)
Michael Kesselring buried a snap shot from the top of the right circle at 2:46 of overtime as Utah came from behind to beat Boston in Salt Lake City.
Kesselring, who played collegiately at Northeastern University in Boston, took a cross-ice feed from Logan Cooley and beat Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman under the crossbar for the winning tally. Vladislav Kolyachonok also scored and Connor Ingram made 22 saves for Utah.
Cole Koepke scored the lone goal for the Bruins, his career-high third and sixth point in six games. Swayman made 30 stops in the loss. Utah had a 32-23 advantage in shots.
Senators 5, Lightning 4
Drake Batherson scored twice and added an assist as Ottawa edged visiting Tampa Bay.
Josh Norris, Brady Tkachuk and Noah Gregor also scored for the Senators, who won for the second time in three outings. Jake Sanderson added three assists and Claude Giroux had a pair of assists. Goaltender Anton Forsberg made 25 saves.
Nikita Kucherov scored and added an assist, and Nicolas Paul, Jake Guentzel and Mitchell Chaffee had the other Lightning goals. Anthony Cirelli added two assists. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 23 shots for Tampa Bay, which lost for the first time this season in four games.
Red Wings 5, Predators 2
Andrew Copp scored twice, including the go-ahead goal early in the third period, as the visiting Detroit topped winless Nashville.
Vladimir Tarasenko, Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson also scored for the Red Wings, while Alex Lyon made 37 saves.
Steven Stamkos scored his first goal for Nashville after signing as a free agent during the offseason. Luke Schenn had the other goal, while Juuse Saros made 19 saves.
Stars 4, Oilers 1
Matt Duchene scored two goals and Jake Oettinger made 30 saves in his first game since signing an eight-year, $66 million contract extension, lifting host Dallas over Edmonton.
The Stars’ Roope Hintz collected a goal and two assists and Jason Robertson had one of each. Logan Stankoven set up a pair of tallies for the Stars, who exacted a measure of revenge after falling in six games to the Oilers in last season’s Western Conference finals. Dallas has opened the season with four home wins for the seventh time in franchise history.
Stuart Skinner turned aside 20 shots for the Oilers, who saw their modest two-game winning streak come to a halt.
Islanders 4, Canadiens 3 (SO)
Noah Dobson scored in the ninth round of the shootout for New York, which squandered two leads before outlasting Montreal in Elmont, N.Y.
Neither team scored in the first three rounds of the shootout before both swapped goals in the next two rounds. Goalies Semyon Varlamov and Cayden Primeau traded saves for three rounds, after which Dobson sent a shot under Primeau’s glove. Varlamov then turned back Logan Mailloux to seal the win.
Bo Horvat, Kyle Palmieri and Anders Lee scored for the Islanders. Varlamov finished with 21 saves. Cole Caufield scored twice, including the tying goal late in the third, and Mailloux had his first NHL goal for the Canadiens. Primeau recorded 33 saves.
Rangers 4, Maple Leafs 1
Chris Kreider scored two goals — one into an empty net — and visiting New York defeated Toronto.
Alexis Lafreniere and Artemi Panarin (empty net) also scored for the Rangers, who have won the first two games of a three-game road trip and three in a row overall. Mika Zibanejad and Reilly Smith added two assists each.
Auston Matthews scored for the Maple Leafs, who had a three-game winning streak end. Toronto goalie Anthony Stolarz made 25 saves.
Canucks 3, Flyers 0
Kevin Lankinen made 26 saves for his fourth career shutout as Vancouver spoiled Philadelphia’s home opener.
Nils Hoglander, Brock Boeser and Kiefer Sherwood scored for Vancouver, which improved to 2-1-0 on its four-game road trip. The Canucks will complete their trek Tuesday in Chicago before heading back to Western Canada.
Samuel Ersson made 29 saves for the Flyers, who had been 4-0-1 in their previous five home openers and had not been shut out in their first home game since 1999. Philadelphia defeated Vancouver on the road in its season opener — a 3-2 overtime triumph on Oct. 11 — but was unable to complete a sweep of the season series.
Wild 3, Blue Jackets 1
Kirill Kaprizov collected one goal and one assist as visiting Minnesota beat Columbus.
Marco Rossi and Mats Zuccarello also scored for the Wild, while goaltender Filip Gustavsson made 23 saves. Minnesota is unbeaten in regulation to kick off the season, with three victories and a pair of extra-time losses in the books through five games. Two of the victories came against the Blue Jackets.
Yegor Chinakhov scored for the Blue Jackets, who have been besieged by injuries, including issues that have put Kent Johnson, Boone Jenner, Dmitri Voronkov, Erik Gudbranson and No. 1 goaltender Elvis Merzlikins on the shelf. Goalie Daniil Tarasov stopped 32 shots.
Blues 4, Hurricanes 3
Mathieu Joseph and Jake Neighbours each had a goal and an assist for St. Louis, which beat visiting Carolina.
Dylan Holloway and Kasperi Kapanen also scored and Joel Hofer made 37 saves for the Blues, who were coming off a 1-0 overtime win against the New York Islanders on Thursday.
Andrei Svechnikov had a goal and an assist, Shayne Gostisbehere and Jack Roslovic also scored, Sebastian Aho had two assists and Pyotr Kochetkov made 15 saves for Carolina, which had its two-game winning streak snapped.
Sabres 4, Blackhawks 2
JJ Peterka scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period to help visiting Buffalo beat Chicago.
Peterka scored for a third straight game to put the Sabres ahead 3-2. He took a cross-ice pass from Tage Thompson low in the left circle for a quick strike at 18:37. Thompson and Peterka each had a goal and an assist while Beck Malenstyn also scored for the Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 35 saves to earn his first win of the season, Buffalo’s second.
Craig Smith scored twice and Lukas Reichel had two assists for the Blackhawks, who took their second loss in three games. Arvid Soderblom made 18 saves.
